What to know about the Essex County Superior Court
- njcourts.gov doesn't say which building houses which division. Your notice or summons names the building and courtroom, so go by that.
- Indictable cases are prosecuted by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Under the Criminal Justice Reform Act (N.J.S.A. 2A:162-15 et seq.), a detained defendant's first appearance and the detention hearing happen here.
- A final restraining order hearing under the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (N.J.S.A. 2C:25-17 et seq.) is held in the Family Part, separate from any criminal charge.

Frequently asked questions
Which Essex County courthouse is my case in?
Check your summons or notice. njcourts.gov lists five Essex Vicinage locations but doesn't assign divisions to buildings, and your paperwork names the exact building and courtroom.
Are restraining order hearings in Essex County heard in criminal court?
No. Domestic violence restraining order hearings are heard in the Family Part of the Superior Court. A related criminal charge is a separate case.
